Fun Water Experiments for Preschoolers: Explore & Learn

“Water wears away the stone,” a proverb passed down through generations, deeply ingrained in our minds. Water is not just a source of life but also holds countless wonders, inspiring young children to explore. So, parents, let’s embark with your little ones on a colorful journey into the world of science experiments with simple yet fascinating water activities for preschoolers!

From a young age, children are fascinated by playing with water. As they dip their hands into a cool basin, they might babble, “Mommy, why is water wet?”. Instead of just explaining, why not try doing some simple water science experiments with your child?

## Water Experiment: Sink or Float?

Let’s prepare:

  • A basin of clear water
  • Familiar objects: A lemon, a pebble, a leaf, a plastic spoon, etc.

Let’s do it:

  1. Parents, together with your child, take turns dropping each object into the water basin.
  2. Observe which objects float and which sink.
  3. Explain to your child why some objects float and others sink (due to material, density, etc.).

Ms. Lan Anh, a preschool teacher at Hoa Sen Kindergarten, shared: “This simple experiment helps children distinguish the properties of objects around them. From there, they become more curious about the world around them.”

This experiment is also a great opportunity for parents to teach children about differences and help them with preschool continuous professional development module 4. Children will realize that each object has unique characteristics, creating diversity in life.

## Water Experiment: Water Disappears?

Have parents ever heard your child ask, “Why was the glass full of water yesterday, but now it’s half empty?” You probably answered that it’s because the water evaporated. So, let’s do the following experiment with your child to prove it!

Let’s prepare:

  • 2 glasses of water (1 glass of hot water, 1 glass of cold water)
  • 2 plates

Let’s do it:

  1. Place 2 glasses of water on 2 plates.
  2. Observe which plate has more water vapor.

Through this experiment, parents can explain the phenomenon of water evaporation to their child, while also teaching them how to observe and compare.

## Suggested Other Water Activities for Preschoolers

In addition to experiments, parents can also refer to some other interesting water activities for children:

  • Painting with water: Children can use a water-dipped paintbrush to paint on paper, walls, or the yard.
  • Playing with soap: Mix water with soap to create foam, let your child have fun playing with soap bubbles.
  • Watering plants: Teach your child how to water plants and let them observe the growth of plants.
